Jay Shore has been helping Retail Pro clients improve efficiency, productivity, and profitability for over 28 years (196 dog yrs.) and is now one of the newest members of the Big Hairy Dog Family. He currently lives in Los Angeles with his lovely wife, two children in college, and three “Big Hairy Dogs” – Apollo, Champ, and Tasha. They are actually “Small Hairy Dogs” with big personalities!
Ken joined Big Hairy Dog in 1997. As Senior Technician, he has demonstrated such a strong aptitude and passion for solving undocumented technical issues that he often has to be forced to log off and take a break!
With over 15 years experience in technical support, Nicholas has seen it all! After graduating from Sacramento State University, he began his tech career in the restaurant industry and then moved on to support the retail industry—which provided him with the perfect skill set when he came on board with Big Hairy Dog.
A graduate of Trinity Western University in Langley, BC, Todd joined Big Hairy Dog in 2013 after spending over six years as the Operations Manager and Retail Director for The Yosemite Conservancy. He’s not only one of our Senior Technicians, Todd also manages Big Hairy Dog’s VIP Division.
Todd enjoys spending time with his three young daughters, often working on DIY home and woodworking projects together, and brewing beer (not with his daughters’ assistance, of course).

As VP of Sales & Marketing, Karen has been helping to break sales records since 1994! That’s 25 years of award-winning sales, helping to build Big Hairy Dog as a leading POS Software and Service provider…worldwide. She has a degree in fine arts (with a minor in business) from the University of Oregon, and with three amazing children and saint of a husband, Karen is still loving life in the Northwest—where she works from home in the Portland, Oregon area.
Her favorite pastime is tailgating at college football games with friends and family. Go Ducks!
As VP of Operations, Colt oversees the Technical & Service Departments. He’s also involved in project management and provides direct support to Big Hairy Dog’s VIP customers—i.e., retailers with 10 or more locations and/or a large volume of licenses. Colt is a graduate of Heald Business College and has been integral to our success since 2003.
Paula has been with Big Hairy Dog for 10 years. While her official title is Service Department Manager, she wears many hats, and at any given time can be found in accounting or answering phones. Her knowledge, experience, and ability to build customer relationships makes her a true leader when it comes to guiding our highly regarded Service Team.
Paula’s hobbies include reading, kayaking, home improvement projects, and spending time with her kids and grandkids.
Mick Malaney’s story is a cliché…actually, quite a few clichés.
“Dreams do come true”: Upon graduating from college, Malaney worked in the sales department of a startup point of sale company. Today, that company is known worldwide as Retail Pro Incorporated.
“Luck of the Irish”: Malaney was mentored by Founder of Retail Pro Software, Michael Mauerer. By 1990, Malaney assisted Mauerer in the expansion of the fledgling Retail Pro dealer network.
“Careful what you wish for”: As the network grew, Retail Pro Incorporated exited direct sales, concentrating solely on software development.
“Can’t beat’em, join’em”: In 1993, Mauerer offered Mick and his wife Sandy, who had joined Retail Pro, an opportunity to become part of the Retail Pro dealer network. The Malaney’s never looked back.
“It’s personal”: Over 25 years later, the Malaney’s personal cell phone numbers are still listed on their company’s website.
“Road to success”: Mick says at the end of the day, Big Hairy Dog customers demand concierge service. Big Hairy Dog delivers it. Period.
Upon graduating with a degree in business from California State University, Sacramento, Sandy Malaney accepted a sales position from Lanier Business Products. She found her stride in outside sales, becoming Lanier’s top producer in their telecommunications division.
In 1988, Malaney joined Checkpoint Systems, selling security systems to retail companies. Malaney gained valuable information about the retail sector that would eventually lead her to her next career at a startup called Retail Technologies, Inc. (RTI) in 1990.
As vice president of sales and marketing, Malaney focused on sales, brand marketing, and expanding product line. (Today Retail Technologies is known as Retail Pro International (RPI), and is headquartered in Folsom, CA.)
Then in 1993, RTI eliminated its sales division to focus solely on software development. Sandy and her husband Mick seized the opportunity to open a software distributorship that included selling and supporting RTI’s point of sale and inventory management solution—Retail Pro.
The Malaneys didn’t need to look far for a business name. “Big Hairy Dog” described the family dog, Molly, an Old English Sheep Dog. Today, pups Dugan Finnegan and Paisley Rose continue to dutifully represent the family business.
Sandy Malaney’s varied experiences in business and in life prepared her for the rigors of owning a small technology firm. Celebrating 27 years (or—189 dog years) of success, Big Hairy Dog continues to expand in the retail market place, while providing an award-winning help desk to customers worldwide.
