Several BHD employees attended and all had heart-warming stories to tell about the evening.  The event was well attended, and overall a complete success.  Much needed money was raised for this great cause.  The photo at right shows one of many gentle and friendly cats that need a good home.

San Francisco City Ordinance requires a charge of 10 cents for the use of 'carry out' bags in retail stores

bhd | 19 September, 2012 10:59

altEffective October 1, 2012, a new Ordinance (Environmental Code No. 101055) will be in effect requiring all retail and food establishments within the city of San Francisco, California to charge a fee for checkout bags, regardless of the composition of the bag.

As this new ordinance will affect all retailers, an extra step will be required at the Point of Sale in order to charge the consumer appropriately.

Big Hairy Dog has created a video for Retail Pro v8 and v9 users, which outlines the simple steps to adding this (non-inventory) bag fee to the purchase.  Retail Pro users on v7 can follow the same principles outlined in the v8 process.

Please review the following videos which outline the step-by-step process to add a bag fee onto your customer's purchases and receipt.

Of course, as always, you may call the BHD Tech line at 916-368-1070 and a tech would be happy to assist you with this process.  Please feel free to call if you have any questions.

Reminder To All Retailers!

bhd | 11 September, 2012 16:27

Please remember it is absolutely critical that you keep your anti-virus software up to date and continuously running on your system.  There are viruses that have the ability to take your system down, and in some cases, your data cannot be recovered.  Therefore, we cannot over-stress the importance of keeping your anti-virus software up to date, and renewed well in advance of the expiration date.

As additional security measure, we highly recommend that you do not use your business computers to visit social media sites (i.e., Facebook, Twitter and personal email sites, such as yahoo.com and hotmail.com).  These sites are at a higher than normal risk of passing a virus to your computer.  To safeguard your company from contracting a virus from these sites, the best practice is to avoid these sites on all computers used for company business.

If you'd like your employees to have the opportunity to check their email, or visit social media sites while at work, we recommend setting up a computer in a rest area, such as your break room, for this purpose.

If you have any questions regarding these safety measures, please contact a BHD Tech at 916-368-1070.

Microsoft Announces the release of Windows Server 2012

bhd | 05 September, 2012 11:34

On September 1st Microsoft released the next version of the product, Windows Server 2012 and discontinuing the 2008R2 version licenses. With the new release, some licensing and pricing changes will be happening that you should be aware of. Here is a summary of the changes:

  • The only versions of Windows Server that will be available are Windows Server Standard and Windows Server Datacenter
  • Both versions will be sold as a per processor license as a 2 license bundle and will require CALS for each user or device connecting to the server.
  • Both versions will have the same features except the Datacenter version will have unlimited virtualization rights and the Standard version will have 2 virtual instances per license.
  • Windows Server Standard 2012 will have a price increase of approximately 22% compared to Windows Server Standard 2008R2. This is due to extra features not included in the 2008 version such as rights to an additional virtual server installation for each license purchased.

Users looking for Windows Server Enterprise 2008R2 will now have to choose between the Standard version or Datacenter version. Users that migrate to the standard version will see a price decrease from the 2008R2 Enterprise version. Users that migrate to the datacenter  version will see a price increase from the 2008R2 Enterprise version.
